Rim Light technique in Wildlife Photography

Create your wildlife photography images using rim light technique

Now a days, as we all know that enthusiasm for wildlife photography has grown tremendously. So, creating an image that gives a wow effect and make the image different from others needs some creativity.

If you are think to learn and make creative images in nature and wild, then this blog is for you.

Now taking about the concept of rim light photography, it is one of the easiest way to make creative rim lighting shots.

What is rim lighting?

Rim lighting photography is a technique that puts light around the edges of the subject. It can be achieved when the sun is low in the sky and the light is behind the subject. Shooting earlier or later in the day when the sun is close to horizon is the optimal time. The time of the day is also known as the golden hour and will create beautiful light with low contrast levels perfect for backlighting. For example, look at the image below:

Correct position for rim light wildlife photography:

Position yourself in such a way that the subject comes in between the light source (Assuming sun as a light source) and you. The light source here should face towards you and behind the subject. Refer Img#2 for visual understanding of the concept.

Once you place yourself at the correct position, you will be able to see the rim light around the subject lit up in your eyes.

A dark background would preferably give better results in this case.

Camera Settings:

Use Aperture Priority (AV) mode in your DSLR camera.

Select the correct ISO value, higher (depending how much your camera model supports) if the subject is moving to achieve better image.

If the subject is still, you can always try lower ISO value to get better image quality.

Now you need to dial in some negative exposure compensation. Try starting with -2 and adjust until only the rim lighting is visible. The end result will be a clean, visual image outlining the shape of your subject and stripping the imagery back to its simplest form.

Click the shutter and you will get the desired result.

When I am photographing wildlife, I focus on freezing the best moments in the wild. I strive to capture these moments by taking people closer to see better the detail, colour and spirit of a wild creature. All these aspects help to illustrate the beauty and might of nature and provide a lasting impression that I hope enthuses and excites the onlooker.
